Service
When given 24 hours to create a photojournalistic story based on the word service, motherhood came to mind. I had the privilege of photographing an incredible family, capturing the unwavering dedication of a mother to her special needs daughter, her energetic six-year-old, and her devoted husband.
At first, I wasn’t sure if my story would be strong enough or if I could find a cohesive narrative among the many moments I had captured. But thanks to my amazing mentors, Mark Kettenhoffen and Scott Allen, who helped refine my imagery, I was able to bring the story to life.
This series went on to win the 2025 Hackman Challenge Champion, awarded to the best series from non-staff photojournalists, and the fifth photo in this series won the 2025 Chip Shot Award, the top honor across all categories. This competition was held at the Washington D.C. Annual Shoot Off - Visual Media Workshop in Arlington, VA.
I am deeply grateful to this family for allowing me a window into their lives and for the opportunity to tell a story through my lens that reflects both my point of view and my heart.
I was only able to submit 5 photos, however I will share more images following the top 5 that weren’t submitted for the challenge.
Shawn is a mother of two daughters, ages 6 and 3. While most people understand that motherhood is an act of service, but service to her family goes beyond a typical family. Their youngest daughter, Grace, has Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, which causes delayed growth and development. Grace is dependent on her mother for all of her needs.
With the help of her mother and family, Grace, just three years old gets stronger everyday.
These hands created me, these hands take care of me, these hands... they make me beautiful.
Service isn’t always noticed. It’s in the quiet moments, the late nights, the endless love.
Motherhood is service without end. The strength it takes to care and love for not only Grace, but her entire family.
